Bienvenido! Welcome! We specialize in bringing you the finest clothing, bags, carvings, jewelry & precious stones from Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. We use and love our products and we know you will love them just as much as we do! Thank you for taking a few minutes to learn about us and how we got started.
Our passion for Central America started in the year 2000. We went to Honduras to learn scuba diving on the bay island of Útila. A few weeks there and a week on the mainland and we were hooked! In 2006 our family moved to Copán Ruinas, Honduras to begin a new life. Mayan Mountain started out as an adventure tour company. For 3 years we took tourists on trips to waterfalls, coffee farms, Mayan villages and lesser known Mayan ruins in the Copán valley. (Watch the video below!) We grew close to many families in those years and have made lasting friendships. In 2009 a presidential coup sent tourism into a downward spiral. That caused us to switch paths from Eco-tourism to exporting hand-made, fair-trade goods. We have had the pleasure to stay in the homes of many of the families we work with and still consider Central America our second home. Our carvers are decedents of the ancient Maya in Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. Each are paid by the piece they produce, and some get a commission when a pieces sells. We would post pictures of our carvers, but notoriety in Central America can be dangerous. Sometimes accidents or illnesses occur and our artists cannot produce for a time. We always take care of them and their families. Mayan Mountain has and always will be a family owned and oriented business.
Jesse Stout is the founder of Mayan Mountain, and has always been a visionary. Even as a small child, he took the initiative to raise money for local disaster relief and people in need. He began selling his parent's candy on the school bus in grade school and later started his own business selling brownies in high school. Through much trial and error, he has had the determination to see his dreams through; all the while wanting to help others around him. In addition to being a loving husband, brother and son, he has always had a heart bigger than the world. His compassionate nature has touched the hearts of many. After moving to Honduras, Jesse wanted to give back directly to the community that accepted him as their own. When a good friend started an orphanage in Copán, he knew he wanted to be a part of it. Mayan Mountain is proud to support Casita Copán and urges you to read their story. We give 10% of our profits to them as well as spread awareness. Check them out below!
And the story continues... After 8 years of full time living in Honduras, Jesse moved back to the USA and continues to grow his business there. We now have a jade workshop in Copán where our carvings and cabochons are made. Another workshop in Nederland, Colorado is where stones are cut and set in silver, or wire wrapped. Our shipping department gets your online purchases to you quickly and safely 5 days a week. Now that we are living in the States again, you can see Mayan Mountain products in person at events around the Denver area! A growing list of our local events is coming soon. Thank you so much for taking the time to learn about us!
